Young Travelers Enjoy Free Train Travel This Summer in Europe
Young travelers are in for a treat this summer as several European regions and states join forces to offer free and discounted train travel for those under 28. The initiative, a result of mutual cooperation, aims to strengthen European ties and pave the way for future cross-border train connections.
From July to August, young people can enjoy free travel within the Region Grand Est in France and the German states of Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland on regional trains like IRE, RE, RB, and S-Bahn. The offer extends to those traveling between specific cities, such as Stuttgart, Saarbrücken, or Mainz to Strasbourg, Reims, or Paris and back.
To participate, youngsters must have a valid ID card or passport to prove their residence. Reservations are mandatory and can be made for free via SNCF Connect for certain routes. Additionally, a series of youth tickets will be mutually recognized by European neighbors during this period. Those under 28 living in Grand Est can also travel free of charge within the region and the mentioned German states.
This summer action is a testament to the cooperation between the Region Grand Est and the German states of Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland. The initiative, led by State Secretary Florian Hauer in Baden-Württemberg, excludes long-distance and urban transport trains. However, it sets a strong foundation for direct cross-border train connections in the future, with plans to continue the action in following years.
