Winnipeg Mayor Launches Hotline for Resident Advice

Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham has launched an innovative initiative, a hotline where residents can leave him advice on city governance. The number to call is 204-788-8060. This unique project is the brainchild of artists-in-residence Francesca Carella Arfinengo, Natalie Baird, and Toby Gillies.

The hotline, dubbed the 'Mayor's Advice Line', has received a wide range of suggestions. Callers have offered fashion advice like 'Don't wear a sleeveless blouse. The men can look down your armpit.', and dating tips such as 'Most guys out there are hopeless. Follow your interests and they’ll lead you to the one you love.'

The artists behind the project asked Winnipeg residents to share memories or spaces through drawings, paintings, or writing, and recorded these conversations. The hotline has gained national attention, with The Drew Barrymore Show reaching out to inquire about it. The artists involved in the Misericordia Ratline project are Diane Whitehouse and Michael Dumontier. In another initiative, the Misericordia Place features a life advice line with 10 recorded messages from residents, including Cheryl Towers' advice to 'live according to what you believe' and Randy Jestin's advice to 'listen' to others. The artists plan to add more messages in the new year.

The Mayor's Advice Line, launched last month at a Winnipeg personal care home, is a unique way for residents to engage with their mayor and share their perspectives. The hotline has sparked conversation and interest, both locally and nationally. The artists behind the project plan to continue adding new messages, ensuring the hotline remains a dynamic and engaging platform for community input.
