Warner Boss David Zaslav Acknowledges Joker 2's Overall Unsatisfactory Performance

Warner Bros. Discovery, under CEO David Zaslav's leadership, has made some perplexing decisions that seemingly contradict meeting fan expectations. Notable flops on their resume include abruptly canceling the daring animated series Reign of Scavengers and abandoning the completed Batgirl movie for tax deductions. Although Warner Bros. typically dismisses its setbacks as a standard part of the entertainment industry, Zaslav acknowledged that Todd Phillips' Joker 2: Madness was a significant letdown.

Recently, during a Warner Bros. earnings call (as first reported by IGN), Zaslav highlighted the sequel, expressing his dissatisfaction with the unstable box office performance.

"Consistency is still an issue at our movie studio, as underscored by the underwhelming performance of Joker 2," Zaslav noted.

Zaslav's remarks occur after Joker 2 flopped at the box office. In its opening weekend, the dark DC musical raked in $37.8 million, and it has since grossed less than $60 million domestically. It's safe to say that not many viewers felt compelled to watch Joker 2 in theaters. The poor performance wasn't helped by the fact that the film received a D grade on CinemaScore, the lowest score ever given to a comic book movie. Previous low-scoring titles included Fantastic Four, which earned a C-.

When taking into account its 2019 Oscar-winning predecessor's 68% positive critical rating and 89% positive fan rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Joker 2 currently has a dismal 32% approval score from both critics and fans. Considering the movie's outlandish $200 million budget, it was no surprise to see it quickly receive an online and video-on-demand release approximately two weeks after its October 29 theatrical premiere.

As IGN observes, Warner Bros. Discovery reported a Q3 revenue of $9.6 billion, which equates to a 3% decrease compared to the previous year. Correspondingly, its theatrical revenue recorded a 40% decline compared to the previous year. According to IGN, this financial dip is tied to the weak box office performance of films like Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian and Twisters 2, as well as the success of 2023's Barbie movie. IGN also reports that Warner Bros. Discovery is underperforming in the gaming sector. In brief, the company's performance isn't looking particularly strong.

In their review (published on io9), we stated, "Joker 2: Madness is less about Arthur and more of a placeholder for him. It’s a movie and a character that can't decide what it wants to be or even what it is, so it fumbles around and ultimately chooses to be nothing at all. At least the original Joker left you with something to ponder. Here, you're left agitated by what could have been or never was."

However, not everyone views Joker 2 negatively. The movie has found supporters in renowned filmmaker Quentin Tarantino and popular game developer Hideo Kojima, who is optimistic that the film will be well-received in the next decade.
