Stuck Ferry on a Baltic Sea Adventure

Vessel carrying 142 travelers aground off the coast of Rügen

Here's a twist in your travel plans if you're hopping from Hiddensee to Rügen: a ferry carrying 142 passengers found itself stranded, turning a routine voyage into an unexpected adventure!

The sea may have calmed the nerves of the passengers, but it wasn't enough to help our marooned ship. The German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) reported the ferry had run aground between the Baltic islands and needed a little help from the coast guard to get back on track. Fortunately, no one was harmed in this navigational mishap.

So, what led to this seafaring snafu? A pesky technical malfunction, apparently. According to shore reports, a faulty relay in the rudder system sent the ship off course and into the shallows. The first attempt to rescue the stricken vessel met with difficulty, but a sturdier boat was able to tow the ferry back into deeper waters.

The 40-meter-long vessel, powered by its own engines once freed, continued on its journey to Schaprode on Rügen. The unexpected halt added an extra three hours to the passengers' travel time.

This mishap took place as the ferry navigated the Schaproder Bodden, a lagoon nestled between Hiddensee and Rügen. The ferry had set sail from Vitte on Hiddensee, heading towards Schaprode on Rügen.

Next time you're on a Baltic Sea journey, remember to keep an eye on the rudder system—just in case!
