Upper Saxony's Vacation Regions See Strong Bookings for Ascension and Pentecost Holidays

Despite the potential for rain in certain areas during late May, vacationers show little deterrence as popular tourism destinations between the North Sea coast and the Harz remain in high demand. A survey by the German Press Agency revealed this trend among local tourism organizations.

North Sea Coast and Islands

The long weekends around Ascension and Pentecost are among the busiest travel days in East Frisia. Wiebke Leverenz, spokesperson for East Frisia Tourism GmbH in Leer, reports similar booking levels to those anticipated in 2024. Accommodations in East Frisia's vacation spots are expected to be between 70 and 90 percent occupied, with some even exceeding 90 percent capacity. This positive outlook has left hosts pleased. However, the hope of fairer weather continues to entice day-trippers to the coast, as this segment contributes significantly to the region's tourism.

The Ostfriesische Islands are also anticipated to be booked solid once again. The Reederei Norden-Frisia expects increased ferry traffic to Juist and Norderney, with 13 planned departures for Norderney on Ascension Day and 19 today. The higher demand is expected to lead to full ferries during the return journey on Sunday, with select ferries from Norderney to Norddeich already fully booked.

Harz

The Lower Saxon hill country similarly reflects a robust booking situation for the Pentecost holidays. According to a spokesperson for the tourism association, reservations are already well above 2025 levels. Positive signals are also emerging from camping sites, with good occupancy rates predicted. If the weather remains sunny and dry, as forecasted, hosts in the region anticipate a significant increase in tourists compared to last year.

Lüneburg Heath

The Lüneburg Heath is nearly fully booked for the Ascension holiday, with a handful of remaining accommodations. Pentecost is slightly more available, but bookings are expected to fill up shortly. Ulrich von dem Bruch, managing director of the Lüneburg Heath GmbH, notes a resurgence in hiking enthusiasts in the heath.

Depending on weather conditions, outdoor activities such as hiking in the Harz and exploring the Lüneburg Heath can prove vital for tourism demand, as stable and pleasant weather tend to amplify the allure of these activities. With proper planning, travelers aiming to visit these regions during peak holiday seasons should schedule bookings well in advance to secure accommodations and participate in popular events.

Overall, the tourism landscape in Lower Saxony continues to be vibrant during the Ascension and Pentecost holidays, attracting both domestic and international travelers. Whether it's the scenic landscapes, cultural offerings, or local events, these vacation regions remain popular destinations, with sufficient demand for accommodations and activities.

  1. The community policy in the vacation regions of Lower Saxony encourages vocational training programs for tourism industry employees to handle the high demand during peak holidays such as Ascension and Pentecost.
  2. With a lifestyle focused on exploration and outdoor activities, many travelers opt for vocational training in tourism, allowing them to continuously visit and experience the vibrant vocational training opportunities offered in the scenic vacation regions of Lower Saxony.
