Updated Travel Information: Considering a trip to Mussoorie? preparatory to the introduction of a novel regulation aiming to manage tourist crowds

New Online Tourist Registration Rule Mandatory for Mussoorie Visitors from August 1, 2025

Starting August 1, 2025, all travelers planning a trip to Mussoorie, India, will be required to register online before their visit. This new rule, launched by the Uttarakhand government, aims to manage high tourist volumes, control traffic congestion, and protect Mussoorie's environment.

To register, visitors must visit the official registration portal at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in/mussoorie. Here, they will be asked to provide essential details such as their full name, Indian mobile number (or email ID for international tourists), arrival and departure dates, number of travelers, and vehicle number plate (if traveling by personal vehicle). After registration, tourists will receive a QR code.

This QR code must be shown at entry points to Mussoorie and during check-in at hotels, guest houses, and homestays, all of which are mandated to verify tourist registration via the portal. The QR code system is designed to control peak-hour traffic, streamline sanitation and emergency services, and improve facilities like waste disposal, parking, and public toilets through better planning.

District Tourism Officer Brijendra Pandey stated that the number of visitors to Mussoorie nearly doubled between 2022 and 2024, making the measure necessary. The registration platform will provide real-time data on tourist footfall, allowing authorities to monitor visitor numbers and adjust resources accordingly.

Travelers should complete this step well before their arrival to ensure smooth entry and accommodation check-in. Indian nationals will receive an OTP via SMS for verification, while foreigners will receive an OTP via email. However, enforcement gaps in narrow or remote areas could potentially arise in the implementation of the QR code system.

Hoteliers and locals have raised concerns about logistical difficulties, such as separating tourists from daily commuters, in implementing the QR code system. Small lodges may find it challenging to verify every visitor under the new system. The government may adjust the rules based on feedback from tourism stakeholders.

Tourists are advised to register online in advance and carry their QR code to avoid entry delays or accommodation issues. The Uttarakhand government has launched a dedicated portal for mandatory visitor registration for Mussoorie. For more information, visit registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in/mussoorie.

Businesses in Mussoorie, such as hotels, guest houses, and homestays, are now mandated to verify tourist registration via the online portal before accommodating visitors. With the launch of the new online registration system, news outlets have been reporting on the changes in Mussoorie's tourism landscape, including lifestyle tips for travelers to ensure a smooth visit.
