Tucson Council Backs Ironwood Forest Monument as Gosar Aims to Dissolve It and Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni

The Tucson city council has shown support for Ironwood Forest National Monument, passing a resolution in its favour. Meanwhile, U.S. Representative Paul Gosar has introduced bills aiming to abolish both Ironwood Forest and Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni national monuments in Arizona. The monuments, particularly Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni, have significant cultural and ecological importance.

Ironwood Forest National Monument, spanning 129,000 acres, was designated 25 years ago. It holds numerous cultural and historical sites, making it a significant landmark. Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni, designated in 2023, preserves ancestral lands and the Colorado River from threats like uranium mining. Both monuments were identified in a leaked memo from the National Weather Service as potential targets for protection roll-backs.

The bills introduced by Representative Gosar are seen as a direct attack on America's outdoor heritage and iconic natural places. They have sparked concern among environmental groups like the Grand Canyon Trust, which is ready to defend attacks against these national monuments and the Grand Canyon National Park. The trust aims to uphold the freedom to access public lands and preserve cultural and ecological values for future generations. Public opinion also favours the protection of these monuments, with 80 percent of Arizona voters supporting Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni and 89 percent of Western voters favouring keeping existing national monument designations.

The Tucson city council's resolution and the public's overwhelming support highlight the importance of Ironwood Forest and Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni national monuments. The bills introduced by Representative Gosar, if passed, could lead to significant losses for Arizona's cultural and ecological heritage. The Grand Canyon Trust and other environmental groups are prepared to defend these monuments, ensuring they remain protected for future generations.
