Tourists left high and dry: Massive travel disruptions leave hundreds without a way back home
After a switch failure at Lehnshallig early this morning, the Sylt Shuttle has been operating on a single track, causing delays and disruptions for hundreds of vacationers returning from their holidays.
At around 6 AM, a switch at Lehnshallig failed, causing two trains to return to the mainland. This incident led to a full shutdown of the service, which was reported by a Deutsche Bahn spokesperson at 9:30 AM. The single-track operation has been in effect since that time and is expected to continue for the rest of Wednesday, causing further restrictions.
As a result, regular train traffic between Niebüll and Westerland has been disrupted. Passengers have expressed their frustration on social media due to the lack of information and long wait times. Many vacationers have had their departure times affected by the morning stop, with some waiting for shuttle trains since 6:30 AM without any sign of movement.
Trains from Klanxbüll to Westerland continued as a shuttle service, but not for car trains. The closure has caused organisational problems for many vacationers on their return journey, with the journey by car train over the Hindenburgdam usually taking about 30 minutes. Unloading is only possible in Niebüll, making the bus service an unviable option for car trains.
Technicians are working intensively to fix the problem, and repairs are making good progress. According to current estimates, regular train traffic should be possible again from Thursday morning. However, for today, passengers are advised to check the Sylt Shuttle's website or social media channels for the latest updates on their travel plans.
The disappointment was great among vacationers due to the unexpected disruption in their travel plans. One woman in a Sylt group wrote that she had been at the loading station since 6:30 AM and there was no shuttle train. Trains between Niebüll and Klanxbüll were not running for a time and were replaced with a bus service.
Despite the challenges, the Sylt Shuttle team is working hard to get the service back to normal as quickly as possible. Passengers are encouraged to be patient and to follow the latest updates to ensure a smooth journey home.
