Tourist arrivals from overseas to Malaysia exhibit a significant increase
Malaysia is gearing up for an ambitious tourism sector expansion, targeting a record-breaking 47 million international tourist arrivals by 2026. This ambitious goal is a testament to the nation's confidence in the effectiveness of its strategic initiatives and progressive policies, which have already shown promising results.
According to recent data from the tourism ministry, Malaysia welcomed 1.82 million tourists from Indonesia, 1.81 million from China, and 1.06 million from Thailand in 2025. Singapore, a key neighbouring country, accounted for a significant portion with 8.34 million arrivals. These figures represent a 20.4% increase in tourist arrivals in early 2025 compared to the previous year.
The government's strategic approach involves focusing on key markets, including Central Asia, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Europe, and Oceania. This diversification strategy aims to capitalise on the high growth potential of these regions and reduce dependency on traditional markets.
Long-haul markets, such as Australia and the UK, are also seeing growth. The number of international tourist arrivals from Australia increased by 16.6% from the same period in 2024, while the UK saw an 8.7% increase.
The tourism ministry, under the leadership of Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, has implemented several policies to boost the sector. These include visa liberalisation and strategic promotional campaigns, which have contributed to the surge in tourist arrivals.
Despite recording 25 million international tourist arrivals in 2024, falling short of its target of 27.3 million, Malaysia remains optimistic about achieving its 2026 goal. The ministry is confident that with continued support for industry players and the implementation of effective strategies, the target is within reach.
