THW Celebrates 75 Years of Disaster Relief and Humanitarian Aid

The Technisches Hilfswerk (THW) in Bavaria is marking its 75th anniversary today. Established in 1950, this federal agency has evolved from its post-war origins to become a vital force in disaster relief and humanitarian aid, both at home and abroad.

Initially founded by Otto Lummitzsch to clear war debris and protect civilians, the THW has since expanded its role significantly. It played a crucial part in last year's flood disaster in southern Bavaria, caused by the low-pressure system 'Orinoco', with volunteers providing countless hours of service.

The THW's international presence has also grown. In 2023, it assisted in rebuilding bridges and supporting rescue efforts in Slovenia and Turkey respectively. Closer to home, in 2016, over 400 THW personnel rescued and recovered victims from the tragic train accident in Bad Aibling. The agency's civil defense capabilities have gained renewed importance in light of Russia's attack on Ukraine, leading to its largest logistics operation to date.

Today, around 16,000 volunteers in Bavaria dedicate their free time to the THW, demonstrating the organization's enduring impact. To celebrate its 75th anniversary, the Bavarian State Chancellery is hosting a reception for THW members in Munich. The THW's adaptability, from its post-war inception to its current role in disaster relief and humanitarian aid, is a testament to its vital role in society.
