The Gundam Live-Action Film Undergoes Revisions in Production Plan

It's been a while since we heard anything about Legendary's plans to transfigure Mobile Suit Gundam into a live-action flick, and it appears there's been a valid justification behind the silence. The project has been revitalized, with a new helmsman and seemingly no longer in tandem with Netflix (which has enough subpar Gundam content currently).

According to Deadline, the previous director, Jordan Vogt-Roberts, and the streaming service are no longer attached to Legendary's Gundam, but the film isn't obliterated yet. Jim Mickle, renowned for his recent adaptation of Sweet Tooth (fittingly, at Netflix again), will now pen, direct, and produce the film, in conjunction with his partner Linda Moran through their company Nightshade. The film will commence production in early 2025.

The precise direction the Gundam film will take is still unclear, other than it being the inaugural live-action film in the esteemed anime series since the calamitous G-Saviour. Whether the narrative will stick to Yoshiyuki Tomino’s original 1979 classic's Earth Federation versus secessionist space colony war, or explore one of the numerous alternative timelines and continuities present in the 45-year-old series, or chart its own course entirely, is yet to be unveiled. We previously glimpsed concept art of a dilapidated, contemporary version of the original RX-78-2 Gundam, and Vogt-Roberts had conveyed his enthusiasm for the series extensively in recent years, so his departure may not bode well for fans already apprehensive about a Westernized spin on the series.

We'll keep you informed about Legendary's plans for Gundam as soon as we obtain more information.
