Temple-rich City of Prayagraj to Advance as "Temple Corridor City" - Insightful Details Revealed Here
Transforming Prayagraj into the 'City of Temple Corridors': A Comprehensive Digital Approach
In an ambitious move to boost religious tourism and preserve the rich cultural heritage of the city, the Uttar Pradesh government has introduced the Prayagraj Tourism Tracker. This digital monitoring system aims to transform Prayagraj, previously known as Allahabad, into the 'City of Temple Corridors'.
The Tourism Tracker collects, analyses, and reports monthly data on tourist activities, including visitor numbers, hotel occupancy rates, transportation logistics, restaurant capacity, and major event execution. By providing detailed insights, it enables authorities to identify areas needing investment or improvement, thereby enhancing the visitor experience and enabling sustainable tourism growth.
Key details and focuses of the program include:
- Promoting Prayagraj as a major religious tourism hub: Following the massive footfall during Mahakumbh 2025, the tracker supports year-round religious tourism development and prepares the city for upcoming events like Ardh Kumbh 2031.
- Development of temple corridors: The project emphasizes restoration and connection of historic and often neglected temple clusters, such as the Dwadash Madhav cluster, with substantial government investment (over ₹129 crore). These corridors aim to create immersive spiritual circuits for pilgrims and tourists.
- Data-driven decision making: By gathering comprehensive visitor data, the tracker enables precise allocation of resources, timely infrastructure upgrades, and efficient event management, facilitating a smoother and more enriching experience for tourists and devotees.
- Sustainable tourism impact: The continuous monitoring and analysis foster informed planning to prevent overcrowding, optimize local infrastructure use, and balance tourism growth with preservation of the city’s spiritual heritage, thereby promoting long-term sustainable tourism in Prayagraj.
Other significant sites like the Bade Hanuman Temple near Sangam, Akshayvat, Saraswati Well, and Bhardwaj Ashram will be highlighted as part of the initiative. Multilingual signboards will be installed throughout the temple corridors to ensure easy navigation for visitors.
Prayagraj holds great significance in India's freedom struggle and is the birthplace of Jawaharlal Nehru, the nation's first prime minister. Anand Bhavan and Swaraj Bhavan, former residences of the Nehru family, are museums in Prayagraj. The primary railway station in the city is Prayagraj Junction (PRYJ).
The Prayagraj Airport (IXD) is the nearest airport to the city. The Allahabad Fort, built by Emperor Akbar, stands near the Triveni Sangam, adding to the city's historical charm. The initiative aims to generate excitement for the Ardh Kumbh in 2031. Prayagraj is situated at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers.
The restoration and connection of significant temples such as the Dwadash Madhav cluster is included in the initiative. The project will focus on enhancing and promoting temple corridors by connecting major religious sites throughout the city. With the Prayagraj Tourism Tracker, the city is set to become a premier destination for spiritual and cultural exploration.
