Tales from Us
In a quest for adventure and freedom, a writer and their husband have traded the confines of traditional jobs for the open road, transforming into the travel duo known as Wandering Bird. The writer found a new home in the driver's seat of a motorhome, towing their bikes behind, while their partner found solace in the world of software.
Initially, the idea of long-term motorhome travel was not on the cards for Wandering Bird. However, a sense of restlessness and an unfulfilled longing for something more propelled them to embark on a journey that would change their lives forever.
Their first big adventure took them to Norway, where they spent five weeks immersed in the breathtaking landscapes, marveling at the Northern Lights, and experiencing the country's rich culture. This taste of the nomadic life was just the beginning.
In the following years, Wandering Bird explored extensively, from eating their way through America, twice finding themselves in a pancake coma, to marveling at the Northern Lights in Iceland. They drove the NC500 in Scotland, explored the entire Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland, and even undertook a daring journey, driving a motorhome from the UK to Iceland and back.
Three months after purchasing their first motorhome, Wandering Bird found themselves in the Swiss Alps, gazing at the Milky Way, a moment that solidified their commitment to this new lifestyle. Realising they wanted adventure and freedom while they were still young enough to enjoy it, they made the decision to embrace a nomadic life.
Wandering Bird adopted practices such as moochdocking—staying at hosts' properties and using their facilities—to reduce expenses on utilities and maintenance, enabling longer, more immersive travel experiences without the constant financial pressure of traditional jobs.
Their transition also involved sharing tips and resources for full-time vanlife travel, indicating a prepared and intentional shift toward a digital nomad lifestyle that supports mobility and flexibility, moving away from traditional employment to sustain their travel lifestyle.
The writer joined an email list of over 45,000 adventurous souls, seeking advice and tips for their motorhome travels and road trips. In time, they found themselves traveling mostly on their own, exploring over 19 countries and covering more than 60,000 miles.
Their journey has been marked by unforgettable experiences, from watching the sunrise over Stonehenge, walking behind waterfalls, seeing Disney Castle, and paying respects at the Menin Gate. They even welcomed a new member to their family, a spaniel named Mac.
In 2017, their lives took a dramatic turn due to the passing of their mother-in-law. This loss served as a reminder of the importance of living life to the fullest and cherishing every moment. Wandering Bird continues to do just that, embracing the nomadic life and the adventures it brings.
