Taking steps to accommodate campers in private gardens to alleviate parking space shortages
Camping Options Expand in Halle through Private Garden Rentals
Halle, Saxony-Anhalt, faces a shortage of official camping pitches, prompting a rise in private garden rentals for vacationing campers. The project, titled "Platz im Garten? Camper warten!," offers 42 private pitches across the city, from inner-city courtyards to sites at the Wallendorfer See.
Initiated in 2023 with state support, the project has since operated independently. Participating hosts voluntarily provide their private spaces for camping, with some offering amenities such as power connections and sanitation options. The arrangement mirrors the concept of couchsurfing, and hosts might also receive help in the garden in exchange for the pitch.
A spokesperson for city marketing revealed that the service team receives an average of 10 to 20 requests per week via email and telephone. A popular pitch is the one at the Tennis Club Sandanger, which has accommodated around 70 vehicles with 140 guests in the first ten weeks of the season.
Despite these efforts, only two official municipal pitches are available in Halle: the year-round open pitch in Faehrstraße and the camping site "Am Nordbad," open since mid-May. Together, they offer 19 caravan and 7 tent pitches, insufficient to cater to the growing demand highlighted by city marketing.
The expansion in camping options mirrors a broader trend across Saxony-Anhalt, with overnight stays on camping pitches increasing by more than 46 percent since 2019, according to the Saxony-Anhalt Tourism Association.
Prospective hosts seeking further information on this project should contact Halle’s local tourism office or city administration for official details and guidelines.
