Slovenia's Emergence as a Prominent Food and Wine Travel Spot

In the heart of Europe, nestled between Italy, Austria, and Croatia, lies the picturesque country of Slovenia. A hidden gem, it boasts a rich wine heritage and a thriving culinary scene, as I discovered during a recent press trip titled "Exploring Slovenia's Gastronomic Excellence."

Our journey began in the Vipava Valley, a scenic and peaceful region in the Primorska region, known for its excellent whites and reds. Here, we embarked on a walking tour through the vineyards, taking in the breathtaking landscapes and soaking up the region's rich wine culture.

Goriška Brda, another premier wine area in Primorska, stands out as Slovenia’s top hub. Renowned for its orange Rebula wines and high-quality Bordeaux blends like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, it is home to many renowned winemakers and top-rated wines.

A highlight of our trip was a visit to the cellar of Grič, a restaurant renowned for its artful, gracious dining experiences. With its salt-walled curing chamber, wine cellar, vegetable and goose egg storage room, and shelves for all that miso and soy sauce, it was a sight to behold. The dishes, expertly crafted by Chef Luka Košir, paired beautifully with the wines we tasted.

Farmhouse restaurant Gostilna Mahorčič, founded in 1903, was another destination worth visiting. Run by the fourth generation of the Mahorčičs, it is a true family enterprise. Ksenija and Martin, the owners, have a near-holy relationship for the food they serve, sourcing all their ingredients from local purveyors and herds. Ksenija is also a ceramics artist and offered a workshop for travel writers.

Our truffle hunting adventure with Matjaž Beznik, the founder of Mati-Truffle, was an unforgettable experience. Accompanied by two truffle-hunting dogs named Erik and Fendi, Matjaž educated us on the diversity of truffles and how to avoid being duped by chemically flavored "truffle" products. The best way to experience real truffles, he explained, is to grate them over food.

Slovenia's wine is indeed sublime. I fell in love with Pinela, an easy-to-drink, fresh, dry white wine, and was introduced to orange wine, a blend of four local grapes, popular in Slovenia.

Our trip also took us to the coastal town of Piran, a little cousin to St. Marco's square in Venice. Its residents have dual citizenship and are fluent in Italian.

In the Horjul region, west of Ljubljana, the capital city, we had a conversation with a German writer about the political climate in the US. The concern about the hostile political climate, specifically the issue of the Trump Administration imposing tariffs on Europe, disrespecting Volodymyr Zelensky, and snubbing NATO, was palpable.

Our truffle hunting expedition ended in the town of Slap at Petrič Urban, a family-owned and operated sustainable wine producer. Here, we were treated to a wine tasting accompanied by a tablescape of cured meats and cheeses.

Nina Froggatt, an olive oil maven, offers a menu of olive experiences at Gramona Farm in Slovenia. Fall and winter, it seems, are the best times for truffle hunting in Slovenia.

In conclusion, Slovenia's diverse wine heritage and gastronomic excellence make it a must-visit destination for any food and wine enthusiast. Whether you're a truffle connoisseur, a wine aficionado, or simply a lover of good food, Slovenia offers some of Europe's most interesting and high-quality culinary experiences.

  1. Slovenia's culinary scene, with its emphasis on local ingredients and distinctive wines, is an essential part of its lifestyle.
  2. A traveler in Slovenia can immerse themselves in various food-and-drink experiences, from truffle hunting to olive oil tastings.
