Russia's Tourism Booms: Foreign Visitors Up 21% in Last Season
Russia's tourism sector saw significant changes during the last season. The country welcomed a 21% increase in foreign guests, with notable shifts in visitor numbers and origins.
The top ten countries for visitor numbers included the UAE and the USA, with impressive increases of 24% and 56% respectively. Meanwhile, Thailand showed a record increase but missed the top ten list. Russia remained the leading destination for tourists from Turkey, while Moscow and St. Petersburg were the most frequently visited regions, with 23% and 22% of entries respectively.
Almost half of the guests came from the near abroad, with a 57% increase over the summer. The near abroad dominated summer visitors, led by Kazakhstan (+95%), Uzbekistan (+84%), and Belarus (+79%). Despite a slight decrease, China retained its position as the leading country in terms of visitor numbers. The flow of visitors from Europe decreased by 4%, but some European countries saw increases and entered the top ten.
