Expansion of Public Transport Necessary in Liesing District due to Growth and Eco-Friendly Development

The Liesing district in Vienna, Austria, has witnessed rapid growth since the last election, with the construction of a new city quarter packed with apartments in its southern tip. This expansion has prompted the need for improved public transportation and infrastructure in the area.

Gerald Bischof, SPO district chairman, has been tasked with initiating various infrastructure projects, including greenspaces and schools, in response to the district’s growth. The SPO currently holds 20 mandates in Liesing, followed by the OVP with 14. The OVP criticizes the haphazard development of the district and advocates for the extension of the U2 line to Siebenhirten.

Other political parties also have proposals for improving public transportation in Liesing. The Greens (7 mandates) seek solutions for better public transport, bike lanes, and more physicians. The FPÖ (5 mandates) are focusing on enhancing security at the Liesing station and addressing street prostitution on Brunner Straße to garner support.

Regarding the broader regional transport infrastructure developments, the Southern Line (Südstrecke) is undergoing significant upgrades by ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) Infrastructure. These upgrades involve modernizing over 100 projects along the line, with 200 km of railway lines being modernized, 170 km of new tracks constructed, and extensive tunnel and bridge building. The expansion of Wiener Neustadt Central Station with a fourth track, which will enable a 15-minute interval service for commuters between Vienna and Wiener Neustadt starting from 2030, will indirectly improve public transport options in the Liesing district.

In conclusion, while no direct expansion of public transport lines or infrastructure has been announced solely within Liesing, the district benefits from ongoing improvements along the Southern Line, which serves the area. These investments aim to support more frequent commuter services by 2030 and shorten travel times across southern Austria, thereby improving public transport accessibility and reliability for Liesing residents.

  1. With the new city quarter in Liesing, residents might find it convenient to explore the latest fashion-and-beauty trends, as shopping districts could be easily accessible with improved public transportation.
  2. After a long day of work and eco-friendly development in the district, one may want to cook a hearty meal, showing the importance of food-and-drink options in a well-rounded lifestyle.
  3. As the Liesing district grows, opportunities for setting up home-and-garden spaces could increase, contributing to a sense of community and amateur gardening among its residents.
  4. Established relationships with neighbors might become fortified while walking their pets together in beautifully designed greenspaces, fostering a positive community environment.
  5. During their free time, Liesing residents might appreciate the chance to travel and experience new cultures or explore pristine landscapes, given the indirect improvement of public transport accessibility through the Southern Line developments.
