Saving Bucks on Fuel for Your Holiday Adventure: Smart Choices for Gas Stops!
Europe (dpa) - Shrewdly fueling up on your journey to the Whitsun holidays can save you enough cash for that initial scoop of ice cream at your destination on many routes. Based on current fuel price data from the EU Commission, the smart fueling strategy varies depending on your destination. For petrol-powered vehicles, Eastbound drivers currently have the biggest savings. Check out this guide:
Southbound
Fuel is cheaper in Austria versus Germany. Petrol is 22 cents cheaper, diesel 6 cents. If Austria is merely a transit nation, the optimal choice depends on your destination: Fuel prices are more expensive in Italy but cheaper in Slovenia, Croatia, or Hungary. Thus, it might be worth a slight detour or filling up only halfway in Austria. Fuel prices in Slovakia differ minimally from Austria, while diesel is cheaper.
Switzerland is not your friend for fueling. Although the EU Commission lacks specific data, information from Touring Club Switzerland suggests fuel costs more there than in Germany, Italy, or France. Drivers headed towards Italy should fill up their diesel tank before departing, since the destination country is also more expensive.
Westward
France is nearly on par with Germany. Drivers bound for Spain can save a bundle at their destination. Belgium offers a significant petrol discount - 16 cents cheaper - but 7 cents more for diesel than Germany. In the Netherlands, fuel costs 17 and 7 cents more than in Germany, and in Luxembourg, it is substantially cheaper for both. Luxembourg is the cheapest country in the west, offering savings of 24 and 16 cents.
Eastbound
The answer here is straightforward: Poland and the Czech Republic offer the most affordable petrol in the vicinity of Germany, with a difference of 35 cents. Diesel is also cheapest there, 18 and 22 cents cheaper than in Germany. Drivers heading further east towards the Baltic states will find fuel cheaper than in Germany, but more costly than in Poland. Those traveling through the Czech Republic to Hungary or Slovakia should withdraw fuel in the transit nation.
Northbound
Drivers heading for Denmark should fuel up before departure: Super petrol is 23 cents more expensive there than in Germany, diesel 14 cents. However, fuel becomes significantly cheaper in Sweden: Super petrol is 28 cents cheaper than in Germany, diesel 9 cents.
The price disparities are typically due to differing taxes and charges. Oil price fluctuations affect most countries. Consequently, the differences - based on statistics from May 26, with newer figures yet to be available - are generally stable.
However, prices can vary depending on the gas station, time of day, region, highway or country road. The disparities are often lower directly before and after the border.
Optimizing your travel route to save on fuel and taking detours is unlikely to be cost-effective in most cases. Additionally, environmentally-conscious travelers should avoid such detours. Even if you only consider costs of 30 cents per kilometer driven, the advantage disappears rapidly.
Travelers who prefer not to fuel abroad should do so the evening before their trip. Fuel is typically a few cents cheaper then than in the morning.
