Pakistan Floods: Millions Displaced, Hundreds Dead as International Aid Flows

Pakistan is grappling with another round of devastating floods, with over six million people affected across Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan since late June. The disaster has claimed nearly 1,000 lives, including 250 children, and pushed millions into poverty.

Riverine flooding has submerged vast areas of Punjab, impacting over 4.7 million people and destroying 2.2 million hectares of cropland. Food prices are soaring as harvests are wiped out. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 1.6 million people have been affected, with flash floods ravaging parts of Gilgit-Baltistan.

The international community is rallying to support Pakistan. The UN and its partners have released $5 million from the UN's Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) and $1.5 million to local NGOs. The German Red Cross has also provided emergency aid, though specific amounts are not mentioned. However, aid workers warn that many communities remain isolated, and waterborne diseases are spreading.

More than 2.5 million people have been displaced, seeking refuge in government camps or with host families. The international community urges long-term support to rebuild resilience and restore livelihoods for the affected populations.
