2024 Tourism Boom: Online Bookings Skyrocket in Germany

Online Bookings in Germany: Over 60 Million Reservations Made Through Digital Platforms - Overnight Accommodation: Sixty-Million Overnight Stays Confirmed in Germany Via Digital Services

Germany's tourism scene has exploded in 2024, surpassing even the pre-coronavirus levels of 2019. A whopping 60.4 million overnights were booked via online platforms, with a staggering 95% of those nights spent in holiday apartments or houses run by small providers (less than ten beds), often owned by private landlords.

While official tourism statistics only consider establishments with at least ten beds, these numbers from online platforms offer a valuable supplement, shedding light on the unrecorded sector. Shockingly, 95% of the bookings via these platforms went unreported in the classic tourism statistics.

Domestic travelers accounted for 42.1 million bookings, marking a 23.6% increase from 2023. International guests followed suit, with a 20.3% growth, totaling 18.4 million. The international guests' numbers saw a colossal 33.8% surge in 2024 compared to 2019, while domestic guests registered a staggering 78.9% increase.

The Netherlands, Poland, and the USA served as the biggest source countries for international guests. Meanwhile, Bavaria topped the list of popular destinations, with Baden-Württemberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Lower Saxony not too far behind. Interestingly, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern saw a whopping 92.9% of bookings from domestic guests, while Berlin attracted the most international guests.

The online travel market in Germany shows no signs of slowing down. Booking.com emerged as the preferred platform for hotel bookings, indicating continued consumer confidence in digital channels. The corporate market, particularly the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector, has seen a notable resurgence, with Germany attracting 14.65 million international business trips in 2024 – just 9% shy of pre-pandemic levels.

While the overall business travel industry shows promising recovery trends, lingering global economic challenges may impact the growth projections for 2025. In contrast, leisure travel has gained traction, buoyed by expanded international connections such as a 15% increase in direct flights from India to Germany.

While cities like Berlin remain popular among international visitors, domestic tourism and nature-based holidays have gained significant momentum. Camping tourism has witnessed a steady rise, with regions like the Franconian Lake District emerging as key camping hotspots. The Lusatian and Mecklenburg Switzerland Lake Districts also boast high campsite occupancy rates. Despite a hike in camping accommodation fees, the affordable, eco-friendly, and nature-centric appeal of camping continues to draw travelers.

In addition, cultural destinations like Bulgaria are seeing an influx of German tourists, evidencing a diversification in traveler preferences.

Comparing the Numbers: A Sweeping Success

Business travel bookings have almost achieved pre-pandemic volumes (91% of 2019 levels for international business trips), with sub-segments like MICE experiencing double-digit growth. Online hotel bookings and travel product purchases remain on the upswing, underscoring the dominance of digital platforms in the tourism sector. Domestic leisure travel, particularly nature-focused experiences, has experienced a sustained boost despite rising prices, highlighting a shift in travel preferences in Germany. The rise in international connectivity, such as the increased direct flights from India, fuels the growth in inbound international tourism.

  1. The community policy should address the unreported tourism statistics, as 95% of the bookings via online platforms went unaccounted for in the traditional tourism statistics.
  2. In the year 2023, the number of bookings via online platforms in Württemberg for lifestyle travel, such as holidays, might offer valuable insights to statisticians.
  3. The competitiveness in the online travel market is evident, with Booking.com leading in hotel bookings, indicating consumer preference for digital channels.
  4. The coronavirus pandemic has had a significant impact on Germany's tourism industry, with the number of international business trips in 2024 reaching 14.65 million, marking a 9% recovery from pre-pandemic levels.
