North Tyneside Creates 'Pop-Up' Cycle Routes and Pedestrian Spaces for Social Distancing
North Tyneside Council, in collaboration with Hartlepool Development Corporation, is implementing measures to maintain social distancing in open spaces and town centres. The council is responding to government requests and planning 'pop-up' cycle routes to support local businesses and residents.
Cllr Carl Johnson, cabinet member for Environment and Transport, has noted the surge in cycling and walking since lockdown began. He emphasised the importance of creating safe spaces for these activities to support business reopening and borough recovery.
The council is working with North Tyneside Council to ensure safe pedestrian and bicycle movement. Proposed measures include creating 'pop-up' cycle routes linking coastal plans to town and district centres, and employment areas with reduced public transport capacity. A two-way cycle route is being designed along the coastal road between Whitley Bay and Tynemouth as part of the National Cycle Network.
Additional pedestrian space is being planned for busy town centre streets. These include Park View in Whitley Bay, High Street West in Wallsend, Nile Street in North Shields, and Front Street, Tynemouth. The promenade and footpaths will be used solely by pedestrians, allowing for social distancing.
Jonah Morris, Sustrans Partnerships Manager in the North East, stated that transport choices will change due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and current space arrangements do not allow for social distancing between pedestrians and cyclists. The council is working closely with businesses to support their reopening and will monitor and review the impact of these measures. The new measures will be included on the 'Space to Move' map and local feedback will be sought.
North Tyneside Council is committed to maintaining social distancing in open spaces and town centres. The 'pop-up' cycle routes and additional pedestrian spaces aim to support local businesses and residents as they navigate the changes brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic. The council will continue to work with businesses and residents to ensure these measures meet their needs and support the borough's recovery.
