Machu Picchu's reputation as a New Wonder of the World could be jeopardized due to ongoing issues.

Machu Picchu, the iconic Peruvian archaeological site and one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, is currently facing disruptions due to ongoing protests. Thousands of travelers have been stranded in recent days, as demonstrations over transportation concessions have escalated, blocking railway tracks and causing tourist evacuations and travel disruptions.

This situation reflects a long-standing structural problem related to transportation management in the area. Authorities and local unions are seeking a sustainable solution involving multiple government ministries and stakeholders.

UNESCO has valued the improvements in visitor management and the implementation of monitoring and conservation tools for Machu Picchu. However, the site faces various intensified challenges, including high tourism pressure, rising prices, risks to heritage, irregular ticket sales practices, transportation difficulties, and limitations in management and conservation policies.

The New7Wonders organisation has proposed a strategic transformation plan for Machu Picchu to key decision-makers, warning that the site is at risk of losing its status due to overtourism, limited conservation policies, and social conflicts. The Peruvian Ombudsman's Office announced a 72-hour suspension of demonstrations to allow the resumption of transit services.

Peru's Ministry of Culture has stated that UNESCO is the only competent body to promote the protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage. The Ministry of Commerce and Tourism is scheduled to meet with tourism associations to seek a consensual solution to the complex situation at Machu Picchu.

Machu Picchu was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and is not included on UNESCO's List of World Heritage in Danger. Despite the current challenges, the site is expected to exceed 1.5 million visitors this year, breaking the previous record set in 2019.

The designation of Machu Picchu as one of the New 7 Wonders is not associated with its UNESCO World Heritage Site status. In 2007, Machu Picchu was designated one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. CNN has reached out to the New7Wonders and Peru's Ministry of Culture for additional comments regarding Machu Picchu's status.

This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
