Leading Experts Map Out Multi-Layered Drone Defense for Europe and Ukraine
Leading experts, including Lesia Ogryzko, Leo Litra, Lyuba Shipovich, and Gustav Gressel, gathered to discuss the future of air defense against drones. The focus was on creating a multi-layered, cost-effective system for both Europe and Ukraine, while addressing financing gaps and reducing dependence on Chinese components.
The group explored the potential of a comprehensive drone defense system, combining autonomous AI-supported surveillance, integrated drone defense, and multi-layer sensor networks. They highlighted the Baltic 'Drone Wall' project as a successful example, involving mobile and networked sensor platforms for real-time border monitoring. In Ukraine, such systems could also include GPS-jammers and Skyranger anti-aircraft systems adapted from Gepard tanks to protect troops and infrastructure.
Training Ukraine and NATO countries to operate these systems is a priority. Given ongoing cooperation and hardware deliveries, this can be achieved relatively quickly. To reduce dependence on Chinese components and fill financing gaps, both sides can rely on EU and NATO financial support, domestic and allied defense industry development, and multinational projects like the EU-backed Drone Wall.
The discussion emphasized the need for a multi-layered drone defense system, combining advanced technologies and effective training. By reducing reliance on Chinese components and leveraging EU and NATO support, both Europe and Ukraine can strengthen their air defense capabilities.
