Krefeld Zoo's Ambitious Ape Expansion After 2020 Fire
Following a tragic fire in 2020, Krefeld Zoo has received overwhelming public support, raising around 4.5 million euros. The city and the zoo have pledged to continue their commitment to ape conservation in the wild. The zoo's director, Dr. Stefanie Markowski, ensures the well-being of the animals remains the top priority in the rebuilding process.
The fire, which occurred on January 1, 2020, resulted in the loss of 30 animals, including beloved apes. In response, the zoo has developed ambitious plans to expand and improve the living conditions for its ape residents. The new enclosures will boast a ceiling height of eight meters, doubling the current space.
The 'ArtenschutzZentrum' project aims to increase the ape area by five times. The first phase, set to open in September 2025, will introduce a unique warm house accommodating three ape species: gorillas, chimpanzees, and mangabeys. The entire project is scheduled for completion by 2030, with the second phase already in planning, set to include a warm house for orangutans and another ape species.
Thanks to the generous donations, Krefeld Zoo is well on its way to providing state-of-the-art enclosures for its ape residents. With the opening of the first warm house in 2025 and the completion of the ArtenschutzZentrum by 2030, the zoo continues its commitment to ape conservation and the well-being of its animals.
