International Consideration for the Nomination "AlpaMYys batyr" at UNESCO
Fresh Take:
Straight Up: A Gathering of Culture Guardians
Steering the session was none other than state advisor, Yerlan Karin, in his chairmanship of the National Commission for UNESCO and ISESCO, held recently. The gathering saw the attendance of leading lights from relevant agencies, alongside heads of UNESCO committees and various Kazakh community leaders.
As Yerlan Karin put it in his speech, "Last year's meeting yielded results, and this year, we're aiming even higher." One of the significant strides the National Commission has taken is the submission of a national application to UNESCO, a multinational nomination titled, "Alpamys Batyr Epic," for placement on the List for Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
According to Karin, the "Alpamys Batyr Epic" holds immense historical significance for Turkic peoples, being one of the earliest folklore epics. The nomination is a crucial step in Kazakhstan's mission to preserve and showcase their rich cultural heritage, which also includes elements like the betashar wedding ritual and Kazakh wrestling already inscribed on UNESCO lists[4].
Keeping the flame of cultural preservation burning, Kazakhstan is exploring new avenues to promote its cultural and historical sites. Plans are in the works to add more monuments to the UNESCO World Heritage List and ramp up educational programs and tourism initiatives[5]. The nomination of "Alpamys Batyr" is a significant move, as it underscores the importance of preserving oral traditions and folklore in Kazakh culture[4].
Government and cultural institutions in Kazakhstan are really pushing to engage a wide audience in safeguarding these cultural elements for future generations[4]. Want to be part of this exciting journey? Subscribe to our Telegram channel and stay updated on all things Kazakh cultural heritage!
