Immersing in the Maldivian Paradise: Unrivaled Luxury and Inclusivity Awaits
Feeling Right at Home in the Maldives: Raaya by Atmosphere's All-Inclusive Life
I found myself crammed into a tiny seaplane alongside a dozen other weary travelers. Jetlagged and elbow-to-elbow, we journeyed towards the Maldives—a well-deserved paradise after a grueling ten-hour flight. As we soared over the glistening Indian Ocean, the island below emerged from the sun's warmth, offering a welcome break from the UK's dreary weather.
This paradise was Raaya by Atmosphere, the latest addition to Atmosphere Core's lineup of luxury properties. Known for their 'joy of giving' philosophy, their collection spans nine opulent resorts within the Maldives. Little did I know that I was about to become one of their lucky guests—and faint-hearted all-inclusive skeptic that I was, I was pleasantly surprised.
So, what made this island getaway so irresistible? Well, Raaya's castaway charm was intoxicating, as I quickly fell under its spell. Believe it or not, I was never big on all-inclusive resorts before, but Raaya changed all of that. As the sun set, I couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief—this island was exactly what I needed.
The Maldives has consistently drawn travelers seeking a break from the gloomy skies of the UK, with its stunning lagoons, clear waters, and year-round sunshine. Raaya didn't disappoint, offering up these idyllic beach views in spades. The resort, situated on the Raa Atoll, is a 45-minute seaplane ride from the capital, and home to 167 villas that stretch along the island's circumference. Despite its diminutive size, the villas offered remarkable privacy, with a fleet of bikes stationed Soho Farmhouse-style, making navigation a breeze.
The beach villas were hidden amidst the island's lush vegetation, boasting breathtaking sea views. The design was minimalist, with bursts of color that kept the focus on the island's natural beauty. The water villas, perched on stilts, offered unparalleled vantage points of the infinite blue horizon. Each villa was equipped with net hammocks or infinity pools to unwind in should the weather grow too warm. Splurging on a floating breakfast delivered to your room was a must-do—nothing beats savoring croissants while watching the sun dance on the waves.
Days gave way to nights amidst a delightful routine of migrating from the beach, to the bar, to the sea, and back again. The villas, lit up like beacons come nightfall, revealed one magical moment after another—my personal favorite being the encounter with two different species of rays swimming beneath our bedroom's window, illuminated by spotlights.
After you've had your fill of relaxing, Raaya's various restaurants beckoned. There were plenty to choose from, each offering a unique dining experience. Raaya Life, the resort's main restaurant, offered meals three times a day and attracted guests for breakfast and lunch thanks to its diverse buffet menu of Chinese, Indian, Maldivian, and Western cuisines. Meanwhile, Seb's Shack served cocktails and snacks during sunset hours, while The Village offered Italian-inspired fare. Mizāj, with its Moroccan ambiance and location by the sprawling infinity pool, was another favorite, offering stunning views of the sunset with an adult beverage in hand.
Perhaps the crown jewel of Raaya's dining options was Ampers&nd, the resort's Pan-Asian restaurant. Situated in an open-sided concrete bunker, the restaurant boasted stylish seclusion, with every table offering views of the ocean. While we only dined there once, we made a habit of returning for lunchtime espressos, feeling oh-so-chic while the waves lapped nearby.
Of course, no all-inclusive island getaway would be complete without water activities. Daily excursions could be booked through the hotel's dive center, which offered snorkeling trips to the resort's house reef. For those seeking more adventure, diving for expensive wine or posh wellness retreats led by Oxford's top docs were also options.
Back at Raaya, the water villas were the stars of the show, with their direct access to the crystal-clear sea. Kayaking and paddleboarding were popular ways to explore the lagoon, while jet-skiing allowed thrill-seekers to zip around the surrounding waters. Water Sports Center provided canoes, jet skis, and rubber rings for guests' enjoyment.
If relaxation was more your thing, there was a small gym and a mini-golf course to explore. For those craving a little more adventure, padel and futsal courts could be reserved through your personal attendant (always just a WhatsApp call away).
The island offered countless ways to rejuvenate after a day of play. The spa, located in the heart of the island, offered secluded therapy rooms for treatments. The extensive selection of massages was a must-try, while simply watching the fountain burble in the relaxation room post-treatment, with a glass of tea in hand, was unimaginably soothing.
The days soon settled into a blissful routine of beach lounging, bar hopping, and sunset gazing, with a pit stop at the crafts workshop to build a miniature dhoni—a traditional Maldivian sailing ship. The nautical theme carried through to the island's climax, where guests were invited to launch their tiny boats in the village square as a symbol of their safe journey home and, hopefully, a return trip to the island.
After a week of this, the island's charm had cast its spell—I was converted. Here's to the all-inclusive life, cocktails and all.
