Heavy Traffic Alert: Southwest Roads to See Gridlock over Holiday Weekend

Get ready for traffic nightmares, folks! If you're driving in Baden-Württemberg this holiday weekend, expect traffic jams like never before. The ADAC Baden-Württemberg has issued a warning. With many people taking advantage of the long weekend for short trips and the end of the Whitsun holidays, driving conditions will be a nightmare, especially on the motorways heading north.

Brace yourself for traffic jams, especially on Sunday afternoon. While Corpus Christi itself might be quieter, short vacationers are expected to leave on Wednesday afternoon, making Wednesday a day to watch out for.

So, what's the best way to navigate the chaos? Advises Holger Bach, an ADAC expert—drive during off-peak hours, or better yet, on a holiday if you can swing it. For flexible drivers, Thursday is your best bet. If you have to drive on the weekend, aim for before 8:00 AM and after 6:00 PM to avoid the worst of the congestion.

Here's a rundown of the particularly congested routes:

  • A5 (Basel - Karlsruhe - Heidelberg)
  • A6 (Nuremberg - Heilbronn - Mannheim)
  • A7 (Füssen - Ulm - Würzburg)
  • A8 (Munich - Stuttgart - Karlsruhe)
  • A81 (Singen - Stuttgart - Heilbronn)
  • Greater Stuttgart area

Construction sites will also slow things down. Watch out for sections of the A8 near Pforzheim and a section on the A6 between the Walldorf interchange and Wiesloch. Last year, the total length of traffic jams in the region at the end of the Whitsun holidays (Sunday) reached a staggering 416 kilometers.

But it's not just Germany. Austria and Switzerland, where Corpus Christi is also a holiday, could see congestion, too—for example, on the Tauern and Brenner motorways and at the Gotthard tunnel. Given the expected heat, the ADAC advises bringing plenty of drinks and taking regular breaks. And remember, never leave children or pets in the car in hot weather.

Stay safe out there, and happy driving!
