Forty-seven literary events scheduled for Erfurt Autumn Literary Festival - Forty-seven autumn festivals to partake in
Don't miss your chance to be part of the spectacular literary extravaganza happening in Erfurt from September 26 to December 5! This year's theme is "Is the end really worth the means?" and it's set to be unforgettable with 47 jaw-dropping events.
With a star-studded lineup of acclaimed authors, this year's literary festival promises to deliver an unparalleled literary experience. Headlined by Charlotte Link ("Dark Water"), Caroline Wahl ("The Assistant"), Florian Illies ("When the Sun Sets"), and Giulia Enders("Organic"), the festival promises to captivate your hearts and minds.
Get ready to meet some of the most influential voices in contemporary German literature up close! On October 26, Juliette Zeh, one of the foremost figures in modern German literature, will grace us in the "Gysi meets in Erfurt..." session. The "Mixed Doubles" series will also return, featuring actor couple Harald Krassnitzer and Ann-Kathrin Kramer on October 18.
Under the guidance of program director Monika Rettig, this marks the 29th iteration of the festival—the last one to carry her distinctive imprint. As she prepares to retire at the end of July, she will be handing over the reins to her successor, Galina Haak. Stay tuned for the exciting changes coming in the 30th anniversary edition of the Autumn Reading in 2026!
Feminist literature, queer, and migrant voices are expected to take center stage in the future. Haak, the 35-year-old incoming program director, has significant experience in the publishing industry and event organization. Her vision includes giving a bigger platform to these voices and attracting a larger, younger audience while keeping the core audience engaged.
The 2026 anniversary year for the Erfurt Autumn Reading will kick off with a grand winter ball at the Haus Dacheroeden in late January.
Started in 1997 and attracting around 20,000 visitors annually, the festival has become a staple local event, drawing in around 100 readings, concerts, and public discussions alongside the Spring Reading.
