Exploring the Volcanic Island of Nisyros, an Unexplored Greek Jewel

Embarking on an impromptu voyage, I found myself on the sulphurous, volcanic island of Nisyros in Greece. I hadn't even noticed I was visiting Greece until a spontaneous date at the Edinburgh Festivals two weeks prior led to an invitation. With a heart still yearning for love and an adventurous spirit, I grabbed my passport and hopped on a flight to Kos—ready for an escapade.

The romance never bloomed, but Nisyros Island filled the emptiness with its unique charm. Now amongst my favourite off-the-beaten-path European escapes, this small, volcanic island offers a serene alternative to crowded, tourist-heavy destinations like Crete, Mykonos, or Santorini.

Nisyros’ allure isn't solely due to its fewer crowds; no, it's the calderas that pulse in its heart. Along the edge lie quaint, whitewashed villages brimming with close-knit communities. In the heart of the island, you'll find the crater of this active volcano, where you can trudge down into the bubbling, sulphur-infused depths.

While many opt for a day trip, usually from Kardamena, I recommend spending a few nights on this remarkable island. Exploring various villages, lounging on black sand beaches, or indulging in a book with a Greek coffee by the waterfront—it's holiday enough.

Nisyros Island captured my spirit and begged me to paint or write. It exuded an artistic vibe that made it the perfect place to escape the hordes of tourists descending upon Greece, even during my peak August visit. Whether you plan to spend a day or a week, here's what you need to know about this volcanic, unique island and how to get to it from other places in Greece.

Things to do on Nisyros Volcanic Island

The island's location in the Aegean Sea means volcanic activity is a common occurrence. While the main attraction undoubtedly lies within its calderas, Nisyros offers other ways to enjoy your stay:

Visit the Stefanos volcanic crater

Stefanos is the star of the show, and no visit would be complete without exploring it. Though it hasn't erupted in over a century, you can walk along the rim, taking in the peculiar, alien landscape before braving the sulphurous depths below. Regular buses traverse the journey from the main port, particularly during the late morning and early afternoon hours. For a more in-depth understanding of the island, visit the Volcano Museum in Nikia.

Marvel at the Monastery

The 14th-century Panagia Spiliani Monastery is the crowning glory of the island. Tucked into a cave on the rocky island face, overlooking Mandraki village, it offers stunning views and a peaceful escape. Explore the duo of whitewashed churches and pause at the shaded waterside cafes in the monastery's courtyard.

Meander through Mandraki village

Renowned as the main village on the island, Mandraki boasts the island's port and a maze of picturesque alleys, filled with kittens and scooters passing by. This charming village epitomizes Greece, with plastic chairs, blue doors, and stairways leading to porches—just the kind of place an artist or writer would seek for inspiration.

Breezy beers on the waterfront

Mandraki's waterfront boasts an assortment of bars and restaurants, offering excellent views, fresh seafood, and local beers. Sit back, relax, and let the soothing ocean breeze wash over you as you indulge in the charming, mostly tourist-free atmosphere.

Venture to the other villages

Pal, Emporios, and Nikia each offer their unique vibe, well worth visiting if you have more than a day on Nisyros. Nikia provides the best views of the volcanic crater.

Take a thermal spa dip

Thanks to the island's volcanic makeup, hot springs are a popular draw for visitors—ideal for a wellness retreat.

Brave the black rock beaches

Nisyros' many black rock beaches bear the brunt of the crashing waves. Don't be deterred, though; their wild character makes them a perfect place to unplug and connect with nature.

Hike the island's trails

Hikers will delight in the well-trodden paths weaving between villages and connecting to remote, natural wonders. Consult the tourism office for suggested routes.

Take a boat trip to Giali

Between Nisyros and Kos, you'll find the volcanic island of Giali, featuring unique pumice and lava domes. Boat trips to Giali are available, but I opted not to take one since firsthand accounts didn't show it was worth the time investment.
