Embarking on an impromptu voyage, I found myself on the sulphurous, volcanic island of Nisyros in Greece. The romance never bloomed, but Nisyros Island filled the emptiness with its unique charm. Now amongst my favourite off-the-beaten-path European escapes, this small, volcanic island offers a serene alternative to crowded, tourist-heavy destinations like Crete, Mykonos, or Santorini.
Nisyros’ allure isn't solely due to its fewer crowds; no, it's the calderas that pulse in its heart. Along the edge lie quaint, whitewashed villages brimming with close-knit communities. In the heart of the island, you'll find the crater of this active volcano, where you can trudge down into the bubbling, sulphur-infused depths.
While many opt for a day trip, usually from Kardamena, I recommend spending a few nights on this remarkable island. Exploring various villages, lounging on black sand beaches, or indulging in a book with a Greek coffee by the waterfront—it's holiday enough.

Stefanos is the star of the show, and no visit would be complete without exploring it. Though it hasn't erupted in over a century, you can walk along the rim, taking in the peculiar, alien landscape before braving the sulphurous depths below. Regular buses traverse the journey from the main port, particularly during the late morning and early afternoon hours. Marvel at the Monastery
The 14th-century Panagia Spiliani Monastery is the crowning glory of the island. Venture to the other villages
Pal, Emporios, and Nikia each offer their unique vibe, well worth visiting if you have more than a day on Nisyros. Nikia provides the best views of the volcanic crater.

Thanks to the island's volcanic makeup, hot springs are a popular draw for visitors—ideal for a wellness retreat.
Brave the black rock beaches
Nisyros' many black rock beaches bear the brunt of the crashing waves. Don't be deterred, though; their wild character makes them a perfect place to unplug and connect with nature.

Wild camping is accepted on a case-by-case basis in Greece, although official regulations may vary. As an alternative, the Haritos Hotel offers economical rooms (€30/night during off-peak season), featuring a pool and proximity to the port, reducing transfer costs.

For a more intimate and personal experience, the Old Traditional House offers a delightful private apartment, located close to the port.
When to visit Nisyros:
Nisyros is a wonderful destination from spring through autumn. For skirting the tourist crowds, consider visiting Nisyros as one of the best places to visit in April in Europe.
Getting to Nisyros Island
Access Nisyros primarily via ferries from the surrounding Dodecanese islands and Athens, with boats using connections through Rhodes or Kos:
- From Tilos to Nisyros: 6 weekly ferries, travel duration: 40 minutes to 1h 15m
- From Rhodes to Nisyros: Ferries run year-round, travel time: 2 hours 40 minutes to nearly 6 hours (due to stops at other islands)
- From Kos to Nisyros: Boats leave from the port of Kardamena and take about an hour. Popular among tourists for day trips or excursions.
Ferries operate year-round but with higher frequency in summer months. Carrying vehicles is often possible. Booking in advance during peak season is recommended.
