Swimming with Humpback Whales in the Silver Bank: A Memorable Encounter

For many, the dream of swimming with humpback whales is a lifelong ambition. One such individual, Britta from Germany, recently fulfilled her dream in the Silver Bank, a unique marine sanctuary located in the Caribbean Sea between the Dominican Republic and Turks and Caicos.

Britta and her son embarked on a journey from Zurich, Switzerland, to Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, where they boarded the Turks & Caicos Aggressor II for a liveaboard trip to the Silver Banks. This region, known for its large population of North Atlantic humpback whales, is one of the best locations worldwide to swim with these majestic creatures, particularly from January through April[1][2].

The Silver Bank offers a rare opportunity for respectful, close encounters in the wild, thanks to its strict regulations and unique status as a sanctuary for North Atlantic humpbacks. Interaction with whales is highly regulated, with only about 60 visitors per week allowed, and scuba diving generally prohibited for tourists[1][3].

Snorkeling trips typically involve tender boats taking guests close to the whales in protected reef areas like near the wreck of the Polyxeni[3]. Water temperatures range from about 24°C (76°F) in winter to 28°C (83°F) in summer, making the swimming comfortable for visitors[1].

On their first day, Britta and her son were thrilled to spot Humpback Whales jumping out of the water on the horizon. Their excitement reached new heights when they encountered a Humpback Whale mother and her calf. Britta managed to get close enough to the whales to see their bubbles, which followed the ideal gas law, and even had a close encounter with a curious calf that came up to within 50cm of their camera[4].

However, the most memorable moment came when Britta found herself within a few centimeters of a female humpback whale. Unfortunately, this close encounter resulted in Britta being hit by a vertical fin of the whale on her head[5]. Despite this, Britta remained calm and continued to observe the whales, capturing stunning underwater photographs using her Nikon D300 camera with a Seacam housing and 10-24mm lens[6].

Britta's journey serves as a testament to the Silver Bank's uniqueness and the unforgettable experiences it offers for those who wish to swim with humpback whales. With its regulated access via liveaboards from Puerto Plata, DR, during the peak whale season of January to April[1][2][3], the Silver Bank remains one of the very best diving/snorkeling locations for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

If you're planning a trip to the Silver Bank, the best time to go is from late January until the end of March[7]. Always remember to respect the whales and follow the strict rules in place to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for both the visitors and the whales.
