Exploring Quinta do Pinheiro, a laid-back farmhouse situated in the Algarve region
Quinta do Pinheiro: A Serene Retreat in the Heart of Algarve
Nestled on the fringes of Ria Formosa Natural Park, Quinta do Pinheiro offers a wilder experience that is a world away from the more established vacation hotspots in the Algarve. Opened as a hotel in January 2025, this 35-hectare farm estate provides a tranquil escape for those seeking a nature-first retreat.
The Dutch couple, Martijn Kleijwegt and Monique Snoeijen, purchased the property in 2021 and have since transformed it into a luxurious retreat destination. Renowned Portuguese architect Frederico Valsassina oversaw the structural renovation, while his daughter Marta Valsassina took charge of the interior design.
Quinta do Pinheiro features five architect-designed multi-bedroom houses, each unique in its design. Some offer private pools, working fireplaces, and architectural features like high ceilings and arch-shaped bedrooms. The design narrative aimed to create a space that is authentic, timeless, and deeply connected to its surroundings, upholding the farmhouse origins while adding a contemporary flair to the guest experience.
The hotel boasts a pool, a lounge area, a fitness studio, and a massage room, all set amidst pine trees, olive groves, orchards, and vineyards. Local vintner takes care of bottling wine from the grapes grown on the property.
This summer, Amsterdam-based chef Ben van Geelen is hosting a culinary residency at Quinta do Pinheiro, preparing dinners for in-house guests. Breakfast and light snacks can be served in your dining room or outside, and local chefs can be booked for in-home meals or cooking classes.
In line with its focus on wellness, Quinta do Pinheiro offers a range of services to rejuvenate mind and body. Local wellness practitioner Michele Surya can provide massages in your casa, and boat rides to Praia da Barra Velha can be arranged for waterfront yoga sessions. A small movement studio is currently available for workouts, and a larger wellness area with facilities for pilates, aerial yoga, and a hammam will be unveiled soon.
The vision for Quinta do Pinheiro is to provide an independent and personal hospitality experience, with a focus on intimacy and privacy. No minibars are found at Quinta do Pinheiro, but full-size Smeg fridges can be stocked with groceries ahead of your stay.
Quinta do Pinheiro aligns itself with the quiet, nature-first pace of life that can be found directly outside its doorsteps. The owners aim to expand the property without compromising its focus on comfort and absence of discomfort. The future developments include the planned addition of a hammam for enhanced wellness offerings and the continued preservation and use of the farm and vineyard as part of the guest experience.
Quinta do Pinheiro is located at 8800-108 Luz, Portugal, and rates start from 300 €. The hotel is a perfect destination for those seeking a serene retreat in the heart of Algarve's natural beauty.
