Tucked in the heart of Rome, the breathtaking Villa Medici crowned by the French! With an enviable location on Mount Pincio, this Renaissance masterpiece flawlessly blends history with modernity, boasting seven hectares of gardens and showcasing spectacular city views. Once owned by Napoleon Bonaparte, it's now the residence of the French Academy in Rome, welcoming successful artists from Ingres to Debussy since 1803.

Want to spend a night in this slice of heaven? Thanks to its recent overhaul, you can! The brainchild behind the transformation is Sam Stourdzé, who took over as director in 2020. Aiming to revitalize the property while preserving its historic charm, he tapped top designers like India Mahdavi to revamp the place.

Currently, six rooms have been revamped, with more on the way. These rooms feature a charming blend of the old and new, with original architectural details complemented by modern, unique designs.

The largest room "Isola" is a veritable haven for contemplation by Sabourin Costes, with a sleek design that focuses attention on the stunning views beyond. A thoughtful centerpiece, a massive wooden table perfect for brainstorming sessions, sumptuous meals, or late-night conversations, anchors the space.

On the other hand, "Stratus Surprisus" by Constance Guisset is a cozy and surprising haven with walls adorned in a playful mix of matte and brilliance, creating an enchanting atmosphere.

The spirit of the original Academy lives on in "Il cielo in una stanza", a redesign by Studio Zanellato/Bortotto that takes inspiration from Rome's beauty. With fire-glazed copper tiles, fireclay bricks, and a pattern reminiscent of ancient Roman masonry techniques, this room beautifully merges the old and the new.

"Camera Fantasia" by Studio GGSV pays homage to Renaissance perspectives, with a stunning swirling black-and-white pattern on the walls. In a testament to sustainability, the walls are coated with a mixture of paint and paper pulp, minimizing environmental impact.

"Pars pro toto" showcases the elegant curves and arches that define the Villa Medici, with a nod to its rich past. The walls feature a velvety mortar called "Malta Antica" traditionally used in historical palaces and an enchanting antique chest of drawers adorned with bronze replacements for missing knobs.

Lastly, "Studiolo" whiskks you away to a dreamy world reminiscent of Antonello da Massina's painting, Saint Jerome in His Study. With a two-storey wooden structure and arched cut-outs, this room transports you straight into a painting from days gone by.

So, are you ready to experience Rome like never before? Whether it's a quiet retreat or a whimsical escape, you'll find it at the Villa Medici. Just be prepared to book well in advance, as availability can be limited.
