The Nature Conservation Foundation of Thuringia and the Nature Conservation Large Project Thuringian Hills invite you to a unique exploration event in the Biosphere Reserve Rhön and Green Belt near Geisa. On Thursday, July 10, 2025, at 10 am, join us for a guided hike titled "Insect Buzz at the Rasdorf Mountain."

The Green Belt of Thuringia, a 763 km stretch along the former inner-German border, is a treasure trove of biodiversity. Designated as a National Natural Monument (NNM) in 2018, it symbolizes the reunification of Germany and the successful connection of nature conservation and history.

This area, rich in diverse habitats, is home to a wide range of insects and arthropods. Among them are various species of butterflies, such as the Swallowtail and Marsh Fritillary, bees and wasps supported by the wildflowers and vegetation, dragonflies near water bodies, and spiders and other arachnids contributing to pest control and ecological balance.

Conservation efforts in these areas focus on preserving natural habitats and biodiversity, with key strategies including the protection of natural habitats, sustainable land use, and educational programs. In the case of the Green Belt of Thuringia, conservation efforts likely involve protecting and restoring natural corridors, promoting sustainable agriculture practices, and engaging local communities in biodiversity preservation.

During the event, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the special characteristics, significance, and preservation efforts for this diversity. The hike will start at the parking lot at the Haus auf der Grenze, Platz der Deutschen Einheit in Geisa.

Registration for the guided hikes is required and can be done via the website www.stiftung-naturschutz-thueringen.de, which also contains information about the guided hikes taking place from April to October.

In December 2023, the Culture Ministers' Conference decided to include the Green Belt in its entirety on the German tentative list for the UNESCO World Heritage List. This further highlights the importance of preserving this unique and diverse ecosystem.

Join us for this exciting exploration and discover the wonders of the Green Belt of Thuringia! Experts Kevin Tofge, Corinna Hossfeld, and Johannes Urban will be on hand to answer any questions about the insects and other many-legged creatures found in the different habitats. We look forward to seeing you there!

Upon joining the unique exploration event in the Biosphere Reserve Rhön and Green Belt near Geisa, you'll delve into the rich environmental-science of the area, where the diverse habitats support a plethora of insect species, including various butterflies, bees, and dragonflies. This scientific exploration also ties into your lifestyle by offering opportunities for travel and learning about the preservation efforts in place for the Green Belt's biodiversity, a UNESCO World Heritage tentative list candidate.
