Documenta, the globally acclaimed art extravaganza, turns 70! Today, we honor the monumental occasion with a grand ceremony at the documenta Hall (6:00 PM). This event is more than just a birthday bash, it's a glance back at seven decades of groundbreaking art and societal engagements while peering eagerly into the future.
Key figures on stage will include Kassel's Green Party Mayor, Sven Schoeller, and his deputy, Timon Gremmels from the SPD, Hesse's Minister of Culture. Following their speeches, a panel discussion titled "Seven Decades of Documenta in Kassel: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow" will unfold. This insightful conversation will include past and present artistic directors of Documenta, shedding light on Documenta's remarkable past, present, and future.
A Citywide Art Spectacle: "7000 Palms"
Celebrating the 70th birthday in style, the city-wide art installation "7000 Palms" will debut. The mastermind behind this project is artist Cosima von Bonin. The central feature of the installation will be a string of pennants designed by the artist, each depicting a silhouette of a palm tree. Every Kassel citizen is urged to join in the fun and decorate their city with these vibrant pennants!
Established in 1955 by Arnold Bode, Documenta premiered on July 15th, in Kassel. The exhibition occurs every five years, running for a span of 100 days each time. The next edition is slated for the period from June 12 to September 19, 2027. Documenta 16 is expected to be curated by the US-American Naomi Beckwith, deputy director and chief curator of the New York Guggenheim Museum.
