Distraught Mothers and Divided Families: Commuters Shocked by Disorder at Railway Terminal
Experiencing the Unexpected: A Woman's Four-Hour Detour at Pasewalk Station is an experience the Berliner woman wouldn't soon forget. On Whit Monday, she found herself stuck at the quaint station with her 10-year-old daughter for four hours. Their train, a packed Regional Express on line 3, was cleared due to overcrowding.
A Train Delay Turned overnight Stay
The woman shared her ordeal in a post, detailing a chaotic scene as they were unable to board the next train. "We spent four hours, from 1:41 PM to 5:42 PM, in Pasewalk, accumulating a total of twelve hours traveling from Szczecin to Berlin that Sunday," she wrote.
Initially, they were stranded in the tunnel as the Federal Police had shut down the entire platform due to the overcrowding following the train's clearance. Other passengers reported families being separated. "A father was forced to send his partner and children ahead with their luggage, leaving him in Pasewalk in uncertainty," she said. A mother was seen pushing a bike, visibly distressed, as her children had stayed in the train with friends.
"A policewoman suggested we find a hotel. She wasn't sure when we'd be leaving," the mother explained. Their plans for the next day were uncertain – the woman questioned if her daughter could attend school and she could show up for work.
"For the remaining three hours, there was no infrastructure. Just a vending machine and a sketchy, pay-to-use bathroom," the woman said. She waited for five trains before finally boarding the Regional Express that left Pasewalk at 5:42 PM and reached Berlin-Gesundbrunnen at 7:32 PM. "But delays are just part and parcel of weekend regional trains," she commented. She's yet to hear back about compensation for her daughter's ticket.
Balancing Safety and Passenger Comfort
Federal Police spokesperson Wulf Winterhoff explained that the clearance was done as part of their duty "to protect and serve," at Deutsche Bahn's request. "Roughly 200 passengers were asked to leave the RE3," Winterhoff confirmed.
After the clearance, police officers in Pasewalk ensured the trains passing through were safe and orderly, with regular arrivals at 1:50 PM, 2:15 PM, 2:42 PM, 3:57 PM, and 4:06 PM, picking up waiting passengers.
A Shared Responsibility between Authorities and Train Companies
"Most travelers displayed understanding, even gratitude, towards the safety measures implemented," Winterhoff added, emphasizing that managing traffic and guiding passengers was Deutsche Bahn's responsibility, not the Federal Police's. The police force had ended its involvement by 4:14 PM, as the last stranded passengers had departed.
Deutsche Bahn has yet to address the travelers' allegations.
- The woman's unexpected four-hour delay at Pasewalk Station was not just about travel, but also a glimpse into the unexpected twists that can happen in general news, such as car-accidents or train accidents.
- Amidst this unsafe overcrowding, the woman's lifestyle and travel choices were disrupted, causing her to question if she could attend work the next day and if her daughter could still go to school.
- Balancing safety and passenger comfort seems to be a challenging task, as highlighted by the incident at Pasewalk Station, requiring the collaboration of authorities like the Federal Police and train companies like Deutsche Bahn.
