Digital Nomad Visa for Sri Lanka to Debut in September 2023
Sri Lanka has taken a significant step towards attracting remote workers from around the world, as the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the Sri Lanka digital nomad visa. This visa, proposed by the Minister of Public Security, Tiran Alles, aims to boost smart tourism within the country.
The growing digital nomad community is already active in Sri Lanka, with activities such as hiking, exploring national parks, surfing, and visiting elephant refuges. With the introduction of the digital nomad visa, the country joins other Southeast Asian nations like Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines in offering this opportunity to remote workers.
To be eligible for the Sri Lanka digital nomad visa, applicants must work as employees, freelancers, or business owners of/for a company or clients located abroad. They must also have a passport valid for at least six months and have international health insurance with coverage in Sri Lanka for the duration of their stay.
The visa is valid for one year and is renewable if the applicant continues to meet the monthly income requirements of $2,000 USD. Digital nomad applicants may include spouses and dependents on their application. A flat visa application fee of $500 USD applies for individual applicants and families.
The capital city of Colombo offers reliable wifi connections and coworking spaces for remote workers. For those interested in checking their eligibility, Nomads Embassy offers a free eligibility check. They also provide a Done-for-You Digital Nomad Visa service to increase chances of visa approval and streamline the application process.
Nomads Embassy partners with local immigration lawyers worldwide to assist with digital nomad visa applications. It's important to note that applicants must show a return ticket exiting Sri Lanka and proof of funds to support their stay when visiting the country.
Most nationalities need to apply for an electronic travel authorization (ETA) to visit Sri Lanka. The ETA visa is valid for 30 days and can be extended for an additional two months. Citizens of Singapore, the Maldives, and the Seychelles can obtain a visa on arrival when entering Sri Lanka. Seychelles citizens can stay for 60 days and extend to 90 days, while Singapore and Maldives citizens can stay for 30 days and extend to 150 days.
For those extending their ETA visa, this can be done online or at the immigration office in Colombo. Sri Lanka's affordable cost of living and modern cities make it a popular destination for digital nomads. The country's rich culture, natural beauty, and growing digital infrastructure make it an attractive choice for remote workers seeking a change of scenery.
