Delhi's Terminal 2 at IGI Airport Will Reopen in October: Key Points to Note
On October 26, 2021, Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in Delhi will reopen its refurbished Terminal 2 (T2), following a five-month transformation. The operator of the renewed T2 is the GMR Group-led Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL).
The reopening of T2 marks more than just an upgrade; it represents a complete transformation of the passenger journey. The terminal now boasts a focus on technology, speed, and safety, aiming to bring the airport experience up-to-date with the times.
One of the key features of the refurbished T2 is the introduction of India's first autonomous docking aerobridges. Six of these bridges have been installed, reducing turnaround time and improving navigation. This innovation is expected to streamline operations, particularly during the winter flight schedule and fog season.
Screening processes have been enhanced for tighter security at the refurbished T2. New mechanical and electrical systems, state-of-the-art fire safety installations, and a strengthened electrical network have been installed for enhanced safety. A brand-new, high-resolution Flight Information Display System (FIDS) has been installed, providing real-time updates.
Self-baggage drop counters have been introduced, allowing passengers to check in and drop off bags quickly without waiting in line. Better crowd management systems are expected to ease the notorious rush at Delhi Airport, while the signage has been redesigned to be clearer, brighter, and strategically placed for easy wayfinding.
Special amenities for travellers with disabilities have been introduced, making the terminal more accessible. The interiors, ceilings, skylight designs, and flooring have been improved to bring a sense of openness and light. The exteriors and access roads have also been reworked to make the approach smoother.
With the reopening of T2, 120 domestic flights a day will be handled, primarily operated by IndiGo and Air India. The terminal's changes will also enhance overall safety and comfort for passengers, as they can expect shorter waits, faster connections, and a more efficient airport experience.
As winter travel picks up, passengers can look forward to a more modern, efficient, and comfortable airport experience at the refurbished T2 of Indira Gandhi International Airport.
