The Unforgettable City of Ljubljana
This year, I've ticked off 15 extraordinary European capitals from my travel bucket list, and whilst each city had its own charm, Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, remains my top pick. It's a stunning city that, despite its quiet beauty, is only a short train ride from the picturesque Lake Bled which is now gaining popularity in the mainstream Europe travel scene.
Wandering the Streets
Ljubljana is made for aimless wandering, in the best way possible. The city centers around the river and is compact enough that you can spend your days leisurely strolling down quaint alleyways, admiring the coffee culture, and peeking into charming shops. Some say it's like a smaller, more relaxed Amsterdam, but I think that's a fantastic thing.
Nature's Playground
Slovenia is a breathtaking country, and Ljubljana is no exception. From the top of the castle, you'll get an awe-inspiring view of the surrounding mountains, especially at sunset. Take a moment to soak it all in, as it's a sight you won't forget.
Foodie's Paradise
Once you've had your fill of coffee or sunset beers along the river Ljubljana, you'll find delicious dining options abound. The cobbled streets and alfresco tables provide the perfect setting to indulge in local dishes such as the famous Bled cake (if you can't make it to Bled itself). For a truly immersive foodie experience, visit the market and sample some of Slovenia's sausage specialties.
Shopping Spree
If shopping is more your thing, Ljubljana has you covered. This city houses high street chains, but don't forget to explore the hidden gems tucked away on small streets. You can easily spend hours browsing vintage vinyl stores, boutiques, and collectables shops that'll add that cool factor to your home.
A Relaxing Capital
Ljubljana is a laid-back capital city, offering the perfect opportunity to unwind. It's the perfect base to explore Slovenia further, and I can't wait to return. This country is high up on my list to revisit.
