Get ready to meet Osman Kavala, a trailblazer despite being locked up in Turkey since 2017. This impressive chap is about to receive the Goethe Medal of the Federal Republic of Germany. Even behind bars, he's making waves in peace and reconciliation efforts across the region, according to the Goethe Institute.

Joining the exclusivity club are Chinese linguist Li Yuan and Belgian author David Van Reybrouck. The trio will have their decorations presented to them in Weimar on August 28.

A world in need of understanding

"In this era of heightened hostility, democratic values face mounting pressure. Now more than ever, we need understanding and individuals who make a positive impact," stated Gesche Joost, the big cheeso at the Goethe Institute in Berlin. Thomas Oberender, the medal's medal-awarding commission chairman, called the laureates "subtle revolutionaries."

Osman Kavala: The Man Behind Anadolu Kultur

Kavala set up Anadolu Kultur in Istanbul back in 2002, an organization that champions human rights, art, and culture. The 67-year-old has been in the slammer since 2017, but in 2022, he got slapped with an aggravated life sentence in a trial heavily criticized on the international stage. The court believed he had a hand in orchestrating a coup in connection to the Gezi protests, which kicked off in 2013 as a local protest against a construction project and ballooned into nationwide opposition against the government.

Germany's Influence in China

Li Yuan caught the attention of the selection committee with her unwavering dedication to the promotion of German as a foreign language in China. Her work significantly impacted the curriculum and teaching methods at Chinese schools and universities.

David Van Reybrouck: The Man Who Makes Stories of People Count

The Goethe Institute can't get enough of Van Reybrouck's books on South Africa, the Congo, or Indonesia. He delivers perspectives that often fall beneath the radar in the West-dominated narrative. His novels represent some of the most significant contributions to contemporary political discourse.

Van Reybrouck combines the technique of oral history in his writing, visiting elderly folk in care homes, remote villages, and the mountainous regions of Nepal to record their life stories.

The Birthday Boy's Medal

2025 marks the 70th time the Goethe Medal is being handed out, the first time publicly in Weimar. The date? August 28, the birthday of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the famous poet (1749-1832). A culturally-prominent panel chose the laureates, including dramaturg Matthias Lilienthal. Previous awardees include maestro Daniel Barenboim and British scribe Ian McEwan.

Kavala's imprisonment, seen as politically motivated, has drawn international criticism, while the award underscores his resilience in promoting intercultural dialogue and peacebuilding efforts in Turkey and neighboring regions. The international community's recognition of Kavala highlights the disconnect between his globally acclaimed cultural and human rights work and the harsh legal actions taken by Turkish authorities.
