Autumn journeys aboard Switzerland's top tourist trains are up for grabs
Embark on an unforgettable journey through Switzerland with the Grand Train Tour, a unique rail experience that showcases the country's majestic mountains, crystal-clear lakes, idyllic villages, and vibrant cities.
The tour, spanning over 1,280 kilometers, features three iconic train routes: the Golden Pass Line, the Bernina Express, and the Glacier Express.
The Golden Pass Line connects Interlaken in canton Bern with Montreux in Vaud, traversing picturesque landscapes for just over five hours and covering a distance of 191 km.
Meanwhile, the Bernina Express, connecting Chur, Graubuenden's capital, to Tirano in southern Italy, passes through Ticino while crossing the Swiss Alps. This panoramic train journey covers a distance of 122 km and takes approximately 4 hours.
For those seeking the vibrant autumn foliage, the Grand Train Tour offers a stunning display from September to November. The Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway (Foliage Train), which connects Locarno in Ticino with Domodossola at the Swiss - Italian border, is particularly popular during this season, covering a distance of 52 km in about 2 hours.
The 'slowest train in the world', the Glacier Express, offers scenic views of snow-capped and ice-covered mountain peaks as it journeys from Zermatt in Valais to St. Moritz in Graubuenden. Covering 291 km in the span of eight hours, this route is just as breathtaking during autumn with its changing leaf colors.
Tickets and seat reservations for all these trains can be purchased and booked online. If you're considering a Swiss Travel Pass, keep in mind that if purchased between September 11th and November 30th, 2025, an extra travel day is given for a four-day pass, or two extra days for an eight-day pass, if the first day of validity is between October 1st, 2025, and March 31st, 2026.
However, please note that from November 3rd to November 17th, the route between Bergün and Preda on the Bernina Express will be closed for construction, rerouting the train via Vereina.
Experience the magic of Switzerland's landscapes with the Grand Train Tour - a rail journey that combines the most impressive panoramic routes the country has to offer.
