Austria intends to reopen its ski slopes for public skiing activities.
Austria Hints at Post-Pandemic Ski Resort Reopening
Vienna, Austria - Chancellor Sebastian Kurz of Austria's ruling ÖVP party has suggested a potential reopening of the country's ski resorts, stating, "As soon as we have brought the infection rates back down to a lower level, tourists from all countries, including Germany, are welcome."
The forthcoming decision to reopen ski resorts is disconnected from any political pressure from Germany, according to Kurz. He further clarified that he had no contact with the leader of Bavaria, Markus Söder, in this regard.
Kurz explained that Austria, while currently experiencing a decline in infection rates, is distinguishing itself from some of its neighboring countries where infection levels are on the rise. He emphasized that Austrian measures, such as lockdowns and restrictions in skiing, gastronomy, and tourism, are intended to lower infection rates.
Austria maintains the freedom to choose when to open its economy, with plans to reopen retail and schools on Monday and ski resorts on December 24. The anticipated reopening for gastronomy and tourism is set for January 7. Kurz acknowledged that these regulations may not mirror those of other European countries, but the goal remains to keep infection levels in control.
Mentioning Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy, and the Czech Republic, Kurz highlighted the differences in their respective regulations but stressed their common aim of maintaining infection control within their respective nations.
Interestingly, certain Austrian ski resorts, such as Sölden, are already operating for summer skiing, with glacier ski areas on the Rettenbach and Tiefenbach glaciers offering all slopes for skiers. In contrast, other European countries have set specific opening dates for their ski resorts, with some already operational.
The reopening of ski resorts in Europe appears to be more influenced by snow conditions and operational readiness than infection rates. Austria's glacier ski areas continue to provide skiing opportunities during the warmer months.
Tourists may find a blend of sports and lifestyle in open ski resorts of Austria, especially as early as December 24, considering the country's potential post-pandemic reopening. The adventure could prolong to various travel destinations within Europe, with some ski resorts already operational, providing a unique experience of sports amidst warmer months.
