Artist Ranjan Kaul's 'Within, Without' Explores Societal Issues

Delhi-based artist Ranjan Kaul presents his exhibition 'Within, Without: Tales of Evanescence' at Urban Fringe, Okhla, until October 5. The show, a collection of over 30 figurative paintings, woodcuts, sculptures, and collages, explores powerful themes such as child abduction, sexual assault, and migration. Kaul, a self-taught artist with a background in engineering and literature, uses his work to document societal issues. His paintings often revolve around missing women and those forced into silence, inspired by newspaper cuttings and social media notifications. In 'Lost Girl', Kaul uses collaged newspaper clippings of missing girls and women to consume the face of a painted girl, symbolizing their erasure. Kaul's compositions combine multiple scenes and narratives within a single frame, inviting viewers to interpret the work based on their own experiences. In 'Turbulent Terrain', he addresses violence in India's Northeast, contrasting beauty with brutality. Animals like chameleons, roosters, and pigs in his work represent power dynamics and modern predations such as cybercrime and trafficking. For Kaul, painting these stories serves as a form of catharsis and a way to document these issues for future remembrance. In 'Booted Out', Kaul depicts mass migration and deportation, with figures struggling across a swampy terrain. The exhibition, open daily from 11 am, offers a thought-provoking exploration of societal issues. Kaul's work, through its powerful symbolism and cathartic expression, serves as a reminder of the hidden scars of life and the need for remembrance.
