A thrilling tale unfolded at Diamond Don's RV Park, located approximately 165 miles east of Dallas, Marion County, Texas. David Durocher and his partner were taking a casual stroll around the grounds when an extraordinary find occurred. Amidst the routine search, they stumbled upon a well-preserved 1661 Spanish piece of gold!
David, recounting the events, explained how his partner initially handed him an odd-looking item found near their car. He initially mistook it for a car wash token, but a closer inspection revealed it's historical significance.
"Whoa, this isn't a modern token... It's a Spanish 8 Real! How on earth did this end up here?" he exclaimed.
Spanish Reals date back as far as 9 centuries, with the first coins minted in gold and silver. Originally based on the gold dinar from the Emir of Córdoba Abd-ar-Rahman III (912-969 CE), they were later adopted by Christian rulers in Portugal, Castille, and León.
During the colonial period, Spain started minting copper variants of the Spanish Real for distribution among its colonies. By 1661, Spain relied heavily on bayous in Marion County for trade and transport routes.
The specific background of David's 8 Real coin remains a mystery, but it's likely one of the 6.6 gram variants, featuring a portrait of King Philip IV. Despite its rich history, it's not worth a fortune today. Fellow coin collector and currency expert approximates its value at around $5.25 in today's currency.
Even before knowing its worth, RV park owner Diamond Don himself congratulated the finders and agreed to the age-old "finder's keepers" rule.
