Alexandria Launches 'Neighborhoods Initiative' to Spread Tourism Benefits
Alexandria, Virginia, has launched an innovative initiative to spread the benefits of tourism across its diverse neighborhoods. The 'Neighborhoods Initiative', launched in 2026, aims to encourage visitors to explore beyond the traditional Old Town corridor. This aligns with Visit Alexandria's strategic plan to create immersive visitor experiences and manage the destination effectively, especially during America's 250th birthday celebrations in 2026.
The initiative includes a new Neighborhoods Hub on Visit Alexandria's website, featuring an interactive map, enhanced content, embedded videos, and expanded storytelling. This hub showcases Alexandria's diverse communities, helping visitors discover unique local experiences and member businesses. Visit Alexandria seeks stories from these businesses about their unique offerings, areas of expertise, family histories, and connections to their neighborhoods. The content was developed in partnership with the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership and neighborhood business associations throughout the city.
Alexandria has been gaining national recognition, recently ranked among the top five U.S. cities by Travel + Leisure for the ninth consecutive year. The city has also reached a historic milestone of $1 billion in visitor spending, with revenues growing 8% in the past year. In fiscal year 2025, city consumption tax revenues from visitor spending reached $88 million, supporting core city services and saving the average Alexandria household $832 annually.
The Neighborhoods Initiative is set to distribute tourism's economic benefits across all areas of Alexandria, encouraging visitors to explore different communities. With the city's continued growth in visitor spending and national recognition, this initiative promises to enhance visitor experiences and extend the benefits of tourism to all corners of the community.
